Street-Legal Golf Cart Rentals

Cruise the Island the Legal, Comfortable Way

If you’ve spent any time on Anna Maria Island, you know a golf cart is the perfect way to get around. Cruising down Pine Avenue with the breeze in your hair, hopping over to Bean Point for sunset, grabbing dinner at Bridge Street — it’s part of what makes the island feel like the island.

But there’s a difference between a regular golf cart and a street-legal one, and if you want to drive on public roads without any worry, a street-legal Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) is what you want. At Crabby Joe’s Cart Rentals, our street-legal fleet is fully outfitted, fully insured, and ready to roll the moment your vacation starts.

What Makes a Golf Cart 'Street-Legal' on Anna Maria Island?

Florida law separates golf carts into two categories. A standard golf cart is limited to designated golf cart paths, private communities and short crossings of public roads. A Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), on the other hand, is registered like a car, insured like a car, and is legally allowed to be driven on any public road with a speed limit of 35 mph or lower — which covers virtually every road on Anna Maria Island.

For a golf cart to be classified as street-legal, it needs to meet a specific list of Florida requirements:

  • Working headlights, brake lights and turn signals
  • Windshield and rear-view mirrors
  • Seat belts for every passenger
  • A parking brake
  • A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • A current Florida registration and licence plate
  • Valid vehicle insurance

Every street-legal cart in our fleet meets or exceeds these requirements. You don’t need to worry about whether you can legally drive it down Gulf Drive to Coquina Beach or over to Cortez for lunch — you can.

Where You Can Drive a Street-Legal Cart on Anna Maria Island

With a street-legal cart from Crabby Joe’s, you can drive on virtually any road across the island, including:

  • Gulf Drive from Anna Maria all the way to Bradenton Beach
  • Manatee Avenue (East Bay Drive) and Marina Drive in Holmes Beach
  • Pine Avenue and the shops and restaurants at the north end
  • Bridge Street and the pier area in Bradenton Beach
  • Down to Coquina Beach at the southern tip of the island
  • Up to Bean Point at the northern tip
  • Across the Cortez Bridge to the historic Cortez Fishing Village for lunch or fresh seafood

Just remember — like any street-legal vehicle, you’ll need to follow the same road rules as a car. Stay in your lane, use your turn signals, obey the speed limits, and don’t drink and drive. Common sense is your friend here.

Why Rent Your Street-Legal Cart from Crabby Joe's

We’re locally owned and family-run. We’re not a big chain, and we don’t treat our customers like ticket numbers. When you rent from Crabby Joe’s, you’re renting from folks who actually live and drive on this island every day. We know which roads get busy at 5 pm, which beaches have the easiest cart parking, and where to catch the best sunset from a golf cart seat (spoiler: Bean Point).

Our carts are newer, clean, and meticulously maintained — no breakdowns, no worn-out tires, no rattles. And because we deliver (fee may apply), you don’t need to waste a single hour of your vacation figuring out logistics. Or you can come to our office at 409 Pine Ave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a driver's licence to rent a street-legal golf cart?

Yes. Because a street-legal Low Speed Vehicle is treated like a car under Florida law, the driver must be 21 or older and  have a valid driver’s licence. Every driver in your group who plans to drive the cart should be prepared to show their licence at pickup.

No, You cannot leave the Island or go over any of the three bridges that exit the Island

Yes. Every passenger, including kids, must wear a seat belt while the cart is in motion. Our carts are fitted with belts at every seating position. Kids under the age required by Florida law will need a child safety seat, just as they would in a regular car.

Our street-legal carts have windshields, and many have optional side and rear enclosures. If a Florida shower catches you out, just pull over and wait it out — most island storms pass in 10 to 20 minutes. If the weather looks unusually rough, call us and we’ll help you plan around it.

No. Golf carts, whether street-legal or not, are not permitted on the sand at any Anna Maria Island beach. But there are dedicated cart-friendly parking spaces at most beach access points, so you can pull up, park, and walk out to the sand in seconds.

Rates vary based on cart size and rental length, and weekly rates offer the best value if you’re staying for a full week. Call us on 855-Crabby-Joes or book online for a real-time quote — we’re transparent about pricing and never charge hidden fees.
